AMAZING Last week down in Helena, Arkansas? Man… that Blues & Arts Camp was somethin’ else. I ain’t even tryin’ to hype it—it was just the truth. Five days of pure, uncut joy with a bunch of wild, beautiful kids, ages six to thirteen, all wide-eyed and full of fire. We laughed, we learned, we made some noise. I think I walked away with more lessons than they did.
Let me paint the picture for you.

We dove headfirst into the blues. Not just the sound of it, but the soul of it. Where it came from. How it rose up outta the cotton fields and church pews. How gospel ain’t just a neighbor to the blues—it’s the backbone. The roots. The grit.

We sang out. We let our little lights shine. We clapped, we shouted, we Hokey Pokey’d like nobody was watchin’. Then we took all that feelin’ and gave it to the puppets. Yeah, puppets, baby. Miss Karen Konnerth came in with her gang of wild characters and taught these kids how to tell stories that mattered. Stories with rhythm and truth and imagination.
And it didn’t stop there.
We learned to play. Kazoos buzzin’, guitars strummin’, kids just lightin’ up from the inside out. We danced. We moved. We got loud. We got quiet. We shared. We connected. It was more than a camp—it was a celebration.
And man, that last day? The showcase? Parents, grandparents, cousins and kinfolk came out. The whole room swelled with pride and joy. Kids shinin’ like stars, showin’ off everything they’d soaked up all week. It wasn’t just cute—it was powerful.

Now I gotta give a big ol’ shout out to the folks that made it happen—the good people at the Delta Cultural Center. They made this whole thing free for the families. Free, y’all. All you had to do was register, pick up the forms from the center, and show up ready to learn and love.

Shout out to Ms Dolls, the education coordinator, who kept the wheels turnin’ and the kids in line. Shout out to Big T Williams, that bluesman from Clarksdale who brought the heat and the heart. And shout out again to Ms Karen Konnerth, who turned puppets into preachers.

But most of all, shout out to the kids. Every one of ‘em. They came with open hearts and left with full ones.
Now I’m just sayin—this thing right here? It needs to keep goin’. Bigger. Louder. More kids. More light. I’d love to see every child get a shot at somethin’ this soulful.
So if you’re readin’ this, and you got a kid, a grandkid, a niece, nephew, neighbor, even just a curious spirit—keep your eyes on Helena. That little town down in the Delta got somethin’ mighty special brewin’.
Now tell me this—what’s somethin’ you learned from a child lately?
