Somebody asked me in a comment , “When did you first feel the blues?”
Now that’s a cute ass question. Real poetic. But let me tell you plain—I ain’t never “felt” the blues like some kinda mood swing. I didn’t wake up one morning, sigh deep, and say, “Lawd, I got the blues.” That ain’t how this thing works.
See, to me, the blues ain’t some emotion you stumble into. It ain’t a condition. Ain’t no pitiful, sad-man genre of music.
The blues is a damn language. A method. A mouthpiece.
When Black folks didn’t have much else—when the world tried to silence us—we had the blues. It was how we talked back. How we said, “I’m still here,” without sayin’ a word. Every note? That was a survival spell. Every moan? A resistance anthem. Still is.
Folks like to box it up. They wanna make it a genre, a soundbite, a Spotify tag. But the blues don’t live in no fukin box. Never has. The blues is every Black expression that told the truth—from gospel choirs to jazz solos, from hip-hop freestyles to neo-soul whispers. If it bleeds, if it speaks, if it ain’t scared to testify—it’s the blues. That's all it is.

Somewhere down the road, that got lost. The record labels, the movie studios—they grabbed hold of it, dressed it up. Started sellin’ the myth instead of the message. Made the blues about heartbreak and booze, so they could market sadness with 12-bars
That’s why you hear folks say, “I got the blues” like it’s a mood ring or a costume.
But for those of us who know, who really know? We see through that sugar. We know the blues ain’t just a feeling—it’s a force. It’s an opportunity. It’s a damn inheritance. It’s a key to the room they never meant to let us in.
So no, I can’t tell you the first time I “felt” the blues.
Because I was born speakin’ it.
And if you’re still out here tryin’ to find it, just listen close. It’s in the hum in your grandma’s voice. It’s in a train whistle on a hot night. It’s in your gut when life deals you hell and you sing through it anyway.
That? That’s the blues, baby. uncut.
So tell me—what does the blues mean to you?
