Somebody asked me once, “Who made you wanna pick up a guitar and sing like your life depended on it?”
I sat with that shit for a minute. 'Cause the truth is—nobody ever made me wanna do that. Hell, I’d never even thought of it in those words before. But it stuck to me. like a good line oughta. Got me thinkin’. Maybe that’s how we should do it. Like it’s breathin'. Like it’s survival. Like the whole damn world falls apart if we don't burn the stage down.
I’ve felt passion before. Love. Anger. Grief. But I didn’t always pour that into my music. I kept it close. Now I see, maybe that’s what separates singin’ a song from livin’ a song—the kind that don’t just entertain, but touch folks. Reach 'em. Heal 'em.

I look at artists like Erykah Badu. That woman ain’t just makin’ tracks—she conjurin’ somethin’. There's a whole undercurrent flowin’ in her sound. Same with Dr. John—there was magic under them bones. Not just stage tricks and smoke, but old wisdom passed down through blood. Hoodoo? Maybe. Maybe not. But there was definitely some deeper meanin’.
And then there’s folks like Pat Thomas. I watched that man close. The way he’d draw them cat heads, hand you a domino laced with history. I always wondered—what was he really passin’ on? A symbol? A spell? A prayer?
His daddy had that same mystery. Like father, like son. That ain’t just blues—that’s legacy. That’s spirit talk.

Now I ain’t sayin’ I’m out here puttin’ hexes in my harmonies. But I am sayin’… I’m startin’ to see the value in singin’ like my life depends on it. Givin’ this thing deeper roots.
And truth is—I have seen glimpses of what it means to others. Folks told me my songs got ‘em through hell. Stopped ‘em from breakin’. Gave ‘em somethin’ to hold when everything else was slipped away.
That wasn’t why I started. But damn if it don’t mean everything now.
So yeah—I’m open. Open to lettin’ spirit guide my pen. Open to diggin’ deeper. Maybe even lettin’ the music work on me, the way it works on them.
What you think? Shouldn’t we all live like our lives depend on it?
Let’s talk.
