390: Champion Sound: Still Rollin’ with My Fender Amp and some Blues Magic

It’s been about four or five years now since I got my hands on this Fender Champion 100 amp, and man… it’s still singin' like the day it came in. Some of y’all might remember when I picked it up—backed by my people, my fans. We crowdfunded this baby together, and it’s been one of the best damn investments I ever made.

This amp? Solid state. Clean. Reliable. Loud. No tubes, but don’t let that fool you—it gives me a steady tone I can trust. 100 watts pushin’ through two 12-inch speakers means it’ll fill up any room, big or small. It’s got a blackface shimmer, a little Tweed growl, and a few built-in effects if I wanna spice it up. But even stripped down, it’s just a good, honest amplifier. No frills needed to make it sing.

And the size? Real road-friendly. Not too bulky, not too heavy. Just right for me.

Touch Over Tricks

Now I ain’t the type to drown my tone in effects. My style leans more on touch and feel, the kind I earn from playin’ late into the night when my fingertips are raw and my soul's hummin'. But I do like a little gain when I want it, and some sustain just to let a note hang in the air like the last word.

Lately I’ve been messin’ with this Zoom multi-effects processor. Y’all gifted that to me about a year ago too—so thank you again. I’m bringin’ it back out as I gear up to hit the road with my new band.

And look, I still keep it simple. I don’t stack on a bunch of effects. But there’s moments, like when I play Rainy Night in Georgia—that’s when I want that reverb to dance, that tremolo to tremble. Just enough to make the guitar weep like the weather.

What About You?

I’m curious though—what’s your vibe when it comes to effects?
You the type that likes it clean and straight? Or do you like a little sauce, a little shimmer, a little pee on the sound?

Do you think I should lean into more effects with this new setup? Or keep it raw and rootsy?

Drop your thoughts in the comments. I love hearin’ from folks who feel this music the way I do.
