384: What Fruit Trees Taught Me About Life

A Bargain, I bet on it

A few years back, I was in the Walmart parking lot. You know the kind—hot pavement, Off to the side, I spotted some sad-lookin’ fruit trees on clearance. Six of 'em, just sittin' there looking dead. Three bucks each. Hell, fruit trees usually run twenty-thirty dollars a piece.

So I scooped 'em all up. Figured maybe—one might make it. Took 'em home and planted a couple. The others? They looked half-dead already, so I left them off to the side of the yard. Didn't expect much. Every now and then, I’d check on 'em. Break a twig, scrape the bark—see if there was still life under all that stillness.

But truth be told? I ignored 'em mostly.

The One That Took Root

That one I planted, though... it surprised me. Grew into a strong little plum tree. Full of promise now. Branches stretchin’ out toward the sun like they know where they’re goin’. I gotta start takin’ better care of it—watchin’ for bugs, keepin’ disease off. It earned that love.

Then just the other day, I went to finally toss the others out. Figured it was time. But when I looked, two of those trees had rooted themselves—right through the bottom of their containers. Found a way to live without me even tryin’.

They had buds, y’all. Little green signs of life. One’s a peach tree. One’s a plum. And damn if it didn’t make me smile.

Spring brings Second Chances

I walked around the yard, slow. Saw the blackberry vines buddin’ too. Spring done showed up, no doubt about it. Everything tryin’ to stretch back to life. And now I’m thinkin’—maybe I oughta give those trees the care they’ve earned. Maybe they didn’t just survive—they chose me.

And yeah, I love plums. Peaches too. You?

But more than that... those trees reminded me of you and me ’.

Life Finds a Way (Even When We Give Up)

See, I’d given up on them. Thought they were done. Dead weight. Just takin’ up space.

But they made it anyway.

And that’s how it is with folks sometimes. We give up on people. Hell, we give up on ourselves. But some folks? They bloom when no one’s watchin’. They take root in the hard ground. They make it anyway.

And when they do... well, you can believe that fruit’s gonna be sweeter than anything store-bought.

So here’s to second chances. To late bloomers. To the ones we counted out, who came back strong.

Let’s enjoy the fruit.

Now it’s your turn—ever had somethin’ or someone come back to life when you’d already gave up? What’s your plum tree story? 🍑🌱
