Ever been to an open mic night? You sign up on that list, full of hope, guitar in your hand, heart beating like a drum. But then—oh, brother—you wait. And wait. Feels like eternity before your name get called. Meanwhile, some folks are hoggin’ the spotlight, playin’ five or six songs while you barely get two. And by the time it’s your turn? The backline band ain't your vibe, and it’s clear they’re settin’ their own groove—not yours.

It’s enough to make a musician ask: Can this whole thing be done fair? Can we all get a shot without somebody showboatin’ or stealin’ the stage? That question burned in me when I started hostin’ the Front Porch Blues Bash at the King Biscuit Festival. I knew I’d be wranglin’ some of the biggest egos and loudest personalities in the game. These folks ain’t amateurs—they’re pros with a swagger to match it. They’re here to let loose, and that stage is a battleground for respect.

I’ve been there myself. Big egos, big dreams, everybody fightin’ to prove somethin’. But here’s the thing: the Front Porch ain’t about showin’ off—it’s about sharin’ the music. When I step up to host, it’s not to showcase me, or even highlight one player over another. It’s about lettin’ the music be the star. The real star.
So how do you level the field? How do you take all those clashing personalities and make ‘em part of the same melody? The secret is simple but tough: treat everyone the same. No matter if you’re green as spring grass or a 50-year vet with stories for days, you get the same shot. No extra time for the flashiest solo. No favoritism for the old guard. At the Bash, music speaks louder than ego.

It’s not easy. Some folks think they deserve more, and others feel like they’re less. But I tell ‘em straight—this ain’t about you. This is about the song. The beginner with shaky fingers gets to share their tune. The seasoned pro? They’re gonna play—but no more, no less than the newbie. It’s a place where music is the great equalizer, the common denominator that pulls us all together.
If you’re cravin’ an experience where the music comes first, where every voice gets a chance to be heard, come hang out with me at the Front Porch Blues Bash. No politics. No posturing. Just raw, honest expression. Whether you’re here to find your voice or share your soul, we’ll make room for you.

Got a song inside you itchin’ to break free? Wanna see what it’s like when the blues connects us all as equals? Mark your calendar, friend. The Front Porch Blues Bash is waitin’ for you.
