350: The Akeem Kemp Band: A Blues Baptism

Let me tell you about a night that left a mark on my soul. I wasn’t just hearing the Akeem Kemp Band for the first time—I had the honor of introducing them, shaking their hands, and watching them build magic right there on the stage.

Picture this: I was working as the announcer,  I got to hype folks up for what was coming. The band rolled in—cool as a breeze but heavy with a purpose. These cats weren’t there to play around; they came to play.

Helping them set up was like getting a peek behind the curtain. Akeem’s guitar, a work of art in itself, looked like it had secrets in the strings. When he handed it to me to check the cable, I felt like I was holding a sword or something. The drummer was tuning up his kit like he was sharpening blades, and the bass player laid down a soundcheck so smooth I almost forgot what I was doing.

Then there was Akeem himself—quiet, focused, with a spark in his eye that said, Wait ‘til you hear this. When I asked if he needed anything, he just smiled and said, "Nah, brother. We’re ready." And damn he wasn't lying.

When it was time to bring them on, I grabbed the mic and leaned into it like an old friend. “Ladies and gentlemen,” I said, “get ready for a band that’s gonna make you feel every damn thing you been hiding from. Give it up for the one, the only, Akeem Kemp Band!”

The first note hit like thunder. Akeem’s guitar sang, wept. His voice carried the kind of weight you can’t fake—like heartbreak, and triumph, was wrapped up in his lyrics. The band behind him? Tight like a fist. They locked in so hard you’d think they were born to play together.

By the time they wrapped up, the crowd was, hootin’ and hollerin’ like they’d just seen the second coming of Muddy Waters. And me? I was grinning like a damn fool, knowing I’d just witnessed something real.

After the set, I got to shake their hands. Told Akeem straight up, “Man, y’all brought the church tonight. Don’t let nobody tell you different.” He laughed, humble as hell, and said, “Appreciate it, brother. We love what we do.”

If you ever get the chance to see the Akeem Kemp live, don’t wait—run for it. Trust me, they’ll shake you down to your core and leave you better off.
