Good mornin’, VIPs. Woke up with Red’s Old Timers Blues Festival sittin’ heavy on my mind, and I can’t shake it. It’s funny how some things just dig in and stay with you. Red's festival is one of those things. It’s always been special, but this year… it hit different. It was my second time playin' there, but it’s the first one since Mr. Red passed. His son, Orlando, took the reins, and let me tell you—puttin’ on a festival like this ain’t no damn joke.
Orlando’s done a hell of a job. That man’s keepin’ his daddy’s vision alive, and I’m proud to be a part of it. Red’s was always about puttin’ the real blues players right up front, keepin’ it raw and true. There’s a joke that used to go around about Red’s Fest—you gotta be 60 or older to get on stage. Makes me laugh thinkin' about how in hell they let me up there! But I’m grateful they do.
Every time I stand beside folks like Willie Farmer, Big T Williams, and Miss Gladys, I know I’m in the presence of legends. These folks are the heartbeat of the blues. They’ve carried this music through the fire, and it’s an honor to share the stage with ‘em. They’ve been grindin’ it out, playin' their souls out, keepin’ the blues alive when times were lean and nobody cared. That’s the spirit right there—the blues never dies, ‘cause people like them keep it breathin’.
Here’s the thing I love about blues folks: we look out for each other. We keep each other’s juke joints open, share a bottle, pass around a meal, swap stories. When one juke joint needs support, the others show up. That’s the real blues way—your place, my place, we’re all part of the same damn family. It ain’t about being alone in this; it’s about community, about keepin' each other goin’.
So if you ever need somethin’, hit me up. I’m here for my blues brothers and sisters, same way y’all have been there for me. We’re all playin’ the same tune, keepin' each other alive, and I couldn’t be prouder to call y’all family.
Here’s to Red’s Old Timers Blues Fest, to the ones who’ve come before us, and to all the people still makin' it happen. Let’s keep this thing rollin’.
Got any festivals like this in your neck of the woods?
