320: Lessons for young musicians

Alright, good mornin’. Today, I got some straight talk for the young bloods out there dreamin’ of a life in blues. Blues ain’t just a genre; it’s a road paved with grit, sweat, and soul. So if you’re ready to walk it, listen up.

First thing: get crystal clear on what you want this life to look like. See, success in music is a shape-shifter—different for everyone. Maybe you’re burnin’ to be on a world stage, or maybe you’d rather keep it close, playin’ for your people and lettin’ music be your hustle on the side. Or maybe, you’re all about the solitude, writin’ songs in a room where it’s just you and the strings. Whatever it is, take time to paint that picture in your head. See it, feel it—plan it.

Now, here’s the heartbeat : be true to yourself. Find out who you are as a musician and lean into that. I’ve been on plenty of stages, but I found my groove doin’ small shows and street sets. No manager pimping’ my setlist, no promoters tellin’ me where to be. Just me, the music, and the freedom to move as I please. That’s what keeps my blues alive.

Some folks live for the road, chasin’ the thrill of big shows and bright lights—and if that’s you, go all in. But whatever your thing is, make sure it matches your soul, not someone else’s idea of success.

Take time to decide what success means to you. Is it fame, freedom, a little cash to keep the dream alive? Is it playin’ from the heart without losin’ a piece of yourself? Focus on your craft. Practice , put in the work, and make connections with musicians, promoters, and fans—this game’s tough, but those relationships are gold.

So to all you young musicians out there: stay true to who you are. Walk your own path, keep the blues alive in your heart, and let it guide you through the highs and lows.

Stay blessed and keep the blues coming’.
