Good morning, I was enjoying a pork chop for dinner last night, my thoughts drifted back to my good friend, Howard Ragland. Howard and I went to high school together, I can still see the smile on his face. He was a born entrepreneur, a natural born hustler with a personality that could light up a juke joint. Howard was the kind of guy who was great with people, a natural-born businessman.
We grew up together, and even in high school, Howard had big dreams. He always talked about owning his own restaurant one day. After high school, while most of us were still figuring out our game, Howard was already making moves. He was one of my first homeboys to start his own business. His passion for the restaurant business was strong from the beginning. He worked at several restaurants, getting experience and honing his skills. I remember him managing a couple of restaurants in the mall, with that determined look in his eye.
Howard made his dream a reality. He opened his own place, a cool spot on the south side of the tracks. Literally, it was right there on the railroad tracks at Holmes Avenue. It was a simple joint, but man, did Howard know how to fry a pork chop. I can't quite explain it, but his pork chops were legendary – big, juicy, and delicious. He’d serve them up between two pieces of bread with some hot sauce. We’d sit out there in our cars or stand outside, chomping down on them pork chop sandwiches.
Howard’s fried pork chop sandwiches were a staple in our hood. Many days were spent hanging out at his place, shooting pool, standing around with the homeboys, drinking cold beer, and enjoying those smack yo mama pork chop sandwiches.
Sadly, I don’t know exactly what happened to Howard. People say he passed away tragically, and though he's no longer with us, his memory lives on. He was a brilliant guy and an inspiration to all who knew him. Sometimes, when I eat a pork chop sandwich, I think of him and those good old days.
Here’s to you, Howard. Your spirit and those damn good pork chop sandwiches will never be forgotten.
Do you like pork chop sandwiches ?
